Update 9/22/07

Travel Status - We just got back from Ica, Peru (about 5 hours south of Lima). We spent the last week down there helping build a parsonage for a church. The earthquake that hit Peru on August 15th destroyed much of the city and several others. We were able to go down with Cody, the guys on the Arriba group, and several other Peruvians from churches in Lima to help with the construction. We worked full days, and were able to get the footings all done. The problem we faced was that we were building a new house over the top of an old one, so we had to dig out the old footings with sledge hammers, picks, and shovels. God definitely gave us the strength to continue day after day!
Not only were we able to work construction, but we also put on a kid's club, handed out food and clothing to families and villages in need, and participated in their church activities.
Future Schedule - We will be staying around Lima for the next several weeks. We are trying to get in contact with different churches and seminaries to which we could visit. We were able to visit a seminary in Ica, and it was exciting to see God preparing future leaders.
Prayer Requests - Please pray for the Bautista family from Pisco. They lost their brother in the earthquake, and then lost another relative in a traffic accident while we were visiting them. They need to come to know Christ as their personal Savior.
The Peru Side - One thing that a visitor to Peru might find interesting is the use of the car horn. In the United States, at least in our neck of the woods, the horn is normally reserved for special occasions involving close encounters. However, here in Peru there are a number of things the common car horn can be used for. It can be used to say hello, announce one's arrival, question a would be passenger (Taxi), caution another driver, tell people not to cross the street, draw attention to ones goods they would like to sell, out of frustrations, and sometimes just for the sheer joy of it. So go ahead, toot your own horn.
